The Process
All of Jessica’s work starts with inspiration from a place or a photograph. If she’s working with a client for a custom piece, she will use the first consultation to understand the significance of the location to be painted as well as the space the art will live within.
From there, she creates a simplified notebook sketch to use as a blueprint for the proposed composition. Her architectural background comes into focus as she then creates a small ink pen sketch on trace paper with colored pencil. She simplifies her sketches with straight lines and shapes to abstract the landscape while creating and maintaining depth.
After developing the composition and canvas size, she creates a to-scale trace line drawing overlay to finalize the perspective and depth of the composition.
Once that is complete, it is time to experiment with color! To develop her color palette, Jessica loose paints on paper with acrylic paint. This acts as a map for her to follow when creating the final piece on canvas. If it’s for a custom piece, Jessica will work with the client to finalize a color palette that resonates and brings continuity or a dramatic focus to the space for painting.
With definitive colors in hand, Jessica then moves on to the final stretched canvas painting. Using both tape and hand painted lines, she initially utilizes matte acrylic paint for the base. She then adds metallic paint as overlayed accents to intentionally play and change with the natural light in a space. This gives the painting an extra depth and dimension.
If framing is requested, Jessica finalizes the piece with custom natural wood float framing.
Every painting is archived each step of the way to document its journey to its final home on a wall. This achieve becomes a meaningful part of the unique custom experience at Jessica Porter Studio for both Jessica and her clients. Let’s get started on your custom painting!
